At MyCase, we believe that generative AI can drive the type of efficiencies and insights that will result in better outcomes for our customers and their clients. We are committed to being at the forefront of this transformation with GenAI technology that serves you, woven into your practice and financial management workflows.

As your trusted legal technology partner, we understand how important it is for attorneys to evaluate AI-powered solutions and feel confident the technology is applied responsibly. These FAQs reflect our deep dedication to transparency. We address how MyCase IQ works and the safeguards we have in place to provide a secure and reliable solution for our customers, and their clients.

What is MyCase IQ and how does it work?

MyCase IQ securely incorporates artificial intelligence into your daily workflows and is purpose-built for legal practice management. There are currently two MyCase IQ features entering beta: 1) Document Summary [in beta] and 2) Text Editing [Coming Soon]. We are very excited about the new ways this technology will enable us to solve important problems for law firms, and we intend to responsibly integrate more AI-powered features over the coming months and years.

  1. Users click on the MyCase IQ button on a document they want summarized.

  2. The selected document is then securely sent to OpenAI, a Large Language Model (LLM) along with a pre-configured prompt customized to the task and legal practice management to increase the likelihood of an accurate response.

  3. The LLM produces a summarized output based on the document, which is then securely sent back to MyCase.

  4. MyCase then displays the summary to the user in a pre-configured format.

How Text Editing Works

  1. When entering text into a MyCase IQ enabled text box, a user will be able to ask MyCase IQ to perform a variety of text editing actions by clicking the MyCase IQ button. Actions will include improving writing, changing tone, translating, and more.

  2. The text entered into the text box, is then securely sent to the LLM along with a pre-configured prompt customized to the task to increase the likelihood of an accurate response.

  3. The LLM produces an output based on the text and prompt, which is then securely sent back to MyCase.

  4. MyCase displays the LLM’s output to the user, allowing them to use or discard the new modified body of text.

What Large Language Models does MyCase IQ use?

MyCase IQ currently utilizes a Large Language Model (LLM) provided by OpenAI and accessed via their API platform.

How is MyCase IQ different from using ChatGPT directly?

MyCase IQ does not use the consumer version of ChatGPT, but rather OpenAI’s API platform. Based on our terms with OpenAI, you can rest assured that your data is safe and will not be used to train OpenAI models. The free consumer version of ChatGPT may use inputs to train the model.

ChatGPT and other generalized GenAI interfaces lack legal domain expertise and are not connected to your law firm’s data, each of which increases the likelihood of inaccurate responses. MyCase IQ is also built specifically for legal practice management support and utilizes prompts customized for law firms and the specific task at hand, increasing the likelihood of an accurate response. We will continue to invest in ways to offer you reliable and secure AI-powered solutions.

Which of my data will be transmitted to MyCase IQ? Will this include personal data?

You remain in control. Your data is not sent to a LLM unless you agree to try out the feature and click a MyCase IQ button like this each time you want to send the specified data to a LLM:

Since you control the data inputs, you also control whether this includes personal data. Please use discretion in determining your input selection. The OpenAI terms prohibit transmission of sensitive health information and personal data pertaining to minors under 13. You should not transmit this type of data to MyCase IQ.

How do you keep my data secure?

As your trusted legal technology platform handling sensitive case and financial data, we are deeply committed to maintaining the security and privacy of your data. Managing privileged case information for thousands of attorneys (and their clients) is a responsibility we take very seriously. We understand that you, as a legal professional, want to ensure that any AI tool you use adheres to stringent industry-standard security and confidentiality protocols.

MyCase ensures that your confidential data is securely sent to OpenAI, a SOC2 compliant platform, by encrypting it when in transit using TLS 1.2 or greater. Both MyCase and OpenAI ensure that your data is encrypted when at rest (AES-256). Additionally, we ensure that no customer data is used to train OpenAI’s models nor exposed to other customers of OpenAI. OpenAI may securely store your data for up to 30 days before deletion to identify abuse.

The MyCase platform also has extensive safeguards in place so that your confidential data is not exposed to another MyCase customer. These safeguards extend to MyCase IQ.

MyCase IQ also adheres to user permissions so that it can only be used on data that the user can already access. This means that a user can only send data to an LLM if they already have permission to access that data.

You can learn more about MyCase’s security and privacy practices by reading this whitepaper along with our Privacy Policy.

What steps does MyCase IQ take to minimize inaccurate outputs?

MyCase IQ only supports pre-configured prompts that are customized for each specific task. These increase the likelihood of an accurate response. Even with these steps, the outputs from MyCase IQ may sometimes be misleading or inaccurate, and we recommend that you carefully review all output prior to any use or reliance on it.

As we add additional features to MyCase IQ, we will continue to make investments in developing and testing MyCase IQ to be less susceptible to inaccurate responses or hallucinations than other generalized GenAI interfaces that lack legal domain expertise, like ChatGPT.

Will my data be used to train any models?

Based on our terms with OpenAI, our customers’ data will not be used to train OpenAI models.

Our MyCase IQ offerings do not train third-party AI models, but we may use inputs and outputs to develop and improve our products in accordance with our Privacy Policy and the security standards described above (How do you keep my data secure?). Artificial intelligence is a rapidly evolving technology. As your trusted legal technology partner we are committed to responsibly navigating the innovation landscape. We deeply respect your customer data, and will always operate within the scope of our data privacy policy.

Does MyCase IQ respect existing permissions?

Yes, MyCase IQ honors existing permissions such that a user will not be able to use MyCase IQ for any items within MyCase that they cannot already access. Learn more about user permissions.

Are there limits on the number of times I can use MyCase IQ?

There are currently no such limits, and we do not charge extra for using MyCase IQ at this time. In the future, there may be volume or frequency limits and/or additional charges.

Can I disable MyCase IQ for my Firm?

Admin users who do not wish to allow users to access MyCase IQ features, such as Text Editing, can turn off MyCase IQ in Firm Settings.

  1. Go to Settings

  2. All Settings

  3. Select Firm Settings

  4. Select the Preferences Tab

  5. Click Edit Preferences

  6. Uncheck Enabled

  7. Click Save Preferences

Note: This is a firm-wide setting. Disabling MyCase IQ revokes access to all MyCase IQ features for all users on the account.
